The Ilkhanate was one of the four khanates within the Mongol Empire. It was centered in Persia, including present day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, and western Pakistan. Was started after the death of Genghis Khan, and his successors wanted to expand the empire. The actual founder of the Ilkhanate dynasty was Hulagu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan and brother of both Mongke Khan and Kublai Khan.
The Golden Age of the Ilkhanate of Persia was destined not to last long. Excessive spending strained the imperial treasury. IN 1290's they tried to save the empire by introducing paper money in hopes to concentrate gold under imperial possession. The widespread of the paper money was soon seen as valueless and many shops had closed down.
Not only economical problems, but also political problems had caused the down fall. After the death of Ilkan Ghazan in 1304, fell into decline. The government fell into local levels, after Mongol rulers have died without an heir in 1335.
